Memories rush at you when a loved one dies, especially a brother who has been there most of your life even though distance has separated you. One childhood memory that keeps playing through my mind is from a time when Jerry decided he wanted to go to“Sheep Harbour”.
Dad was working in Sheet Harbour, about 100 km from our home in Onslow, outside Truro, Nova Scotia and wasn’t home every day so Jerry wanted to go see him. Using our toy shovels, we dug a hole under the fence that surrounded our front yard. When the hole was big enough, I held up the fence so Jerry could crawl under it.
Jerry had just gotten to the road when Mom asked “Where is Gerald?” I explained that he was walking to “Sheep Harbour” to see Daddy. Mom put Laurie, just a toddler, in the yard with me and started running. She got to him just as a car came around the corner and, thankfully, stopped as Jerry was walking in the middle of the road.
Jerry and I were probably 3 and 4 years old at that time so you can imagine life was interesting once he, Laurie and I got older and Sandy and Harry came along.■
