Obituary of Derek James Butler
Please share a memory of Derek to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Derek James Butler, born August 7, 1969 in Calgary Alberta, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew and loved him. On September 28, 2024, Derek passed suddenly surrounded by family at EK regional hospital.
Derek had many friends and there are several stories to share. Since a young age Derek was always full of antics and mischief, keeping his parents on their toes. This attribute followed him into adulthood, with the ever tell tale smirk.
Early in his life, his family moved to Kimberley BC, where Derek attended Selkirk High school before heading out into the world. Derek was highly motivated, he had a “work hard, play hard” attitude. Owned a landscaping business, construction, did Security (cyber and physical) and others in-between. Derek was the forerunner of Computer sales and service in Kimberley with his store Mailbox Plus (later expanding to stationary and computer products, in a larger store). As everyone knew, Derek was a huge Calgary Flames fan. He also loved the challenge of trivia and a good joke. Took any chance to share stories of his teen years, had many about his vehicles. Had many treasured memories of his time playing slow pitch. Enjoyed being creative in the kitchen, always a good meal when he cooked.
Derek’s proudest accomplishments in his life were his two son’s, Brendan and Liam. They are his Pride and Joys, He was always proud to share stories of the boys lives. After living in Saskatchewan, he moved back to Kimberley in 2020. Derek was employed by an area casino as a Video Surveillance Security supervisor.
Derek always looked out for those he cared about, having their backs at all times.
Derek was a beloved son to Gayle (Webb-deceased) and Douglas Butler, a devoted father to Brendan (Jasmine) and Liam Butler, a dear brother to Theresa (Butler) Dowling (deceased), a true friend of mutual support to Kelly King from Kentucky and a cherished love to Ylva (Jill) Samuelson.
His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to have known him.
There will be no service at Dereks request
