Obituary of Norma Ellen Dixon

Please share a memory of Norma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Norma Ellen Dixon nee Leslie, on October 2, 2024, at the age of 96.

Norma was born on April 15, 1928, in Eston, Saskatchewan, to Scottish immigrant parents from Inverness, Scotland. She was the fourth of five children, growing up alongside her siblings Alexander, Margaret, Anne, and Mary. Her upbringing was rich with Scottish traditions, and her family's love of learning and hard work shaped the remarkable woman she became.

Norma pursued her passion for education, becoming a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, where she inspired generations of students with her intelligence and love for books. Her sharp mind and dedication to learning were evident in everything she did.

In 1953, Norma married the love of her life, Ross Dixon. Together they raised three children—Bruce, Kevin, and Sandi—building a loving home and instilling in their children the values of kindness, perseverance, and loyalty. In 1970, the family moved to Cranbrook, where Ross worked as a funeral director until his untimely passing in 1978. Despite this devastating loss, Norma remained a devoted single mother, always putting her children first and ensuring their happiness and success.

Norma’s pride in her children was immeasurable, and her joy extended to her two beloved granddaughters, Taylor and Teagan, both daughters of Sandi. Norma adored watching them grow and took great pride in their achievements - particularly their academic achievements. Her passions were many, from reading and spending time with friends, to being an active member of the community. She was an avid golfer and curler, serving on the executive boards of local clubs for many years. She cherished her bridge club and was a devoted Jeopardy fan, never missing an opportunity to show off her quick intellect.

Norma’s presence will be deeply missed by her children, Bruce (Bonnie), Kevin, and Sandi; her granddaughters, Taylor (Brad) and Teagan (Michael); and her cherished friends. The family would like to extend their special thanks to the wonderful caregivers at GardenView in Kimberly and the staff at EKRH. Norma will be reunited with her many loved ones, including her dear friends Cathy Walls and Dona Bannink, family, and late husband. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, intelligence, and unwavering love.

A celebration of Norma's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations  be made in Norma’s name to the SPCA, as she had a special love for all animals.

Rest in peace, dear Norma. You will be forever in our hearts.
