Obituary of Stien Vander Maaten

We’re saddened to announce the passing of Stien Vander Maaten on March 5, 2024.

Dad was born August 2, 1931 in Swan River, Manitoba to Jessie and Nicolaas Vander Maaten.

Dad arrived in Kimberley working construction in 1948 and made it his home for the next 76 years.

Dad married his first wife Edna May Lord, and together they raised 7 children until her passing in 1992.

Dad served in Korea and was presented with a Korea Service Medal as well as a United Nations Korea Medal.

Upon returning to Kimberley, he worked at the mighty Sullivan for the next 40 years as a miner, Mine Rescue, and retired as the General Mine Foreman.

He was a beloved Husband, Father, and Stepfather. An avid outdoorsman, Dad loved golf, hunting, fishing and especially his Grandchildren. He was totally enthralled with their laughter and their antics as he gently interacted with them.

In 1996, Dad married Donna Alberton and spent many hours berry picking, canning, watching curling on television and faithfully tending to his garden and lawn. He was meticulous in everything he attempted and did.

There was none other that could match him as a husband, father, and grandfather. We loved him and do love him.

Stien is survived by his wife Donna, daughter Jo-Ann (Merv) Abdai, Sons Van (Judi), Cal, and Martin (Dorie), daughter in law Lynda, Kelly Alberton and Darren Alberton and their children.

Stien also leaves cherish, 21 Grandchildren, 25  Great Grandchildren, and 5 Great great Grandchildren.

Predeceased by his parents, Jessie and Nicolaas, his brothers Jack, Robert, and Lavern and sister Marguarite. His first wife Edna, daughters Judy and Joan, son Steve, and grandson Mitchel.

Thanks to Interior Health and their incredible home staff. The care they gave Dad was extraordinary.

A Graveside service for Stien will take place on Saturday August 17, 2024 at 12pm in the Kimberley Cemetery. A Celebration of life will follow at the Kimberley Golf Club at 1pm. Please come and join in a time to share stories, memories and to honor Stien.
