Obituary of John Charles Poweska

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John lived life right up until the end, embracing every moment and bringing out the best in people. With his infectious smile and unwavering optimism, he was a beacon of positivity, always seeing the glass half full even on the cloudiest of days.

John knew the true value of friendship and family, and he frequently celebrated with those who were dear to him. "Scotch o'clock" became a cherished tradition, where he would gather with friends, family, and neighbors to share laughter, stories, and the occasional dram.

A true lover of the outdoors, John spent his well lived life hunting and fishing alongside his lifelong friends Alan Gordon, Milt Howe, and Roger Shannon. Their camaraderie grew through countless shared adventures, not all of which were built on a robust safety plan.

One of John’s greatest pleasures came from witnessing the happiness of families enjoying the Eagles Nest campground, a place he and his partners and friends, Myles Murtack and Roger Shannon, had created. He took immense pride in the joy it brought to others.

John was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and devoted wife, Joanie P, affectionately known as "my snooklepuzzin" to him. Together, they embarked on countless adventures, exploring the world with the company of Lisa, Dave, Roger, and Betty. Their travels often took them to visit Marian and Jim Corrigan in the Dominican Republic, creating memories that will be treasured forever by the family.

Despite the distance, John remained close to his sister Stasia Landa, even with her residing in sunny California. Their bond was unbreakable, bridging the miles with their shared values of love and family.

John worked as hard as he played, whether he was managing his own electrical contracting business, working at the Elko sawmill, or constructing the Eagles Nest Campground. The dedication he poured into his various endeavors was a testament to his perseverance and commitment.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, John made a lasting impact on the community as a hockey coach. Countless young players benefitted from his guidance and support, carrying his lessons with them as they played in Cranbrook and beyond.

But above all else, John was a devoted father, brother, husband, and grandfather. His home was a sanctuary of love and warmth, always open to friends and family. Multiple generations have been blessed with fond memories of Abbie and Poppa’s place.

The twinkle in John’s eye was brightest when his grandchildren, Kiana and Luke, came to visit, along with his great-granddaughters, Mira and Ariella, affectionately known as the "Twinadoes." His joy knew no bounds when surrounded by his precious family.

John is survived by his Children daughter Lisa and her husband, Dave White. Son Mark Poweska and his partner Edie Thome, Grandchildren Kiana and Luke and Great-Grandchildren Mira and Ariella Gayse.

John was preceded in death by his beloved Joan and his parents Karl and Joanna Poweska.

As we bid farewell, let us remember the laughter, love, and optimism John shared so freely. May his legacy live on in our hearts as we strive to see the best in others, embrace life's adventures, and keep the fires of friendship burning bright.

Rest in peace, Poppa. You will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
