Gloria Jean Lewis
On June 27, 2023 Gloria Jean Lewis lost her battle with cancer. Jean was always adamant
that she would go out on her own terms, and she did exactly that, choosing her
moment, and being surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully at the
Cranbrook Hospital.
Even in her final moments, Jean’s spirit and sense of humour
remained strong, as demonstrated by her final words, “Ready Freddy”.
Jean was born ‘Gloria Jean Gottinger’ on May 27. 1949 in Balcarres, Saskatchewan. From
a very early age Jean insisted that she be called by her middle name, which perfectly
captures her personality; an independent, no nonsense, give-it-to-you-straight, kind of
person.
At the age of 24 Jean became a mother of twin boys, Mark James and Michael Todd.
Jean’s strength, and determination is best represented by the fact that she raised her
family as a single parent.
Along with being fiercely independent, Jean was also known for being fiercely loving; she
would do anything for anyone, always finding the time to help when often there was
none. Selfless, caring, and giving would be an understated assessment of Jean's
character.
Jean also had a love of gardening and a love of animals. She had a very green thumb,
and if she wasn’t growing plants or vegetables, she was raising animals. She loved to see
things grow, she loved to nurture, she loved to love. This was Jean.
Jean was predeceased by her parents Martin and Elsie Gottinger, and siblings Nora,
Edna, Cliff, Nelson and Verne. Jean is survived by sisters Bernice and Terri, her two sons
Mark (Tanya), Mike (Amanda), and four grandchildren; Jade, Kyah, Ethan and Matthew.
