Obituary of Sandra McLennan Whitney
On Sunday, July 16, 2023, Sandra ”Sandy” McLennan Whitney, wife, Grammie, and mother, passed away at the age of 84 in Kimberley, BC. Sandy will be lovingly remembered by her son Chris and daughter-in-law Karen, and two grandchildren Daniel and Alexander. Sandy is predeceased by her loving husband, William Michael “Mike” Whitney and younger sister Diana, and has recently been joined by her older sister Barrie, who passed away on August 4. She is fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Janet (Geoff) and her nieces and nephews – Bruce(Alison), Glenn(Jacqui), Michael, Ray, Peter(Nena), Sue, Jennifer(Gerry), David, Megan, Laura, Ben and the many grand nieces and nephews.
Sandy was a great part of the Kimberley community and loved the mountains, sunny ski days, quilting and was a part of numerous local community groups. She will also be remembered as a wonderful part of the Geneva Park family spending summers with friends, playing tennis, swimming, hiking, crafting and spoiling her grandchildren from the family’s lake Couchiching home, Cottage 31.
Sandy grew up in Toronto, Ontario with her sisters and parents, Donald and Barbara Solandt. She left to go to Queen’s University, graduating with a science degree, marrying Mike shortly after graduation and accompanying him on his first career that involved travelling out west to many remote sites where Mike was a supervising engineer. Sandy and Mike briefly stayed in Edmonton, Alberta, long enough for Sandy to give birth to son Christopher, but ultimately settled in Streetsville, Ontario to raise their family and became part of a community of friends. Sandy and Mike moved out west on their next big adventure, making many new friends, and enjoying the great outdoors in the beautiful community of Kimberley. Sandy will be missed by all.
