(MBSS hallway, 1980) "Sheppard, how are you?"
"Fine thanks, Mr. Kershaw." He stopped abruptly and puts a hand on my shoulder.
"No Mark. REALLY how ARE you? We need to know."
I never took Drama, nor did PK ever instruct me, yet that fleeting interaction in a high school hallway stuck with me my entire life and I reflect on it often. I think he was teaching me, as I'm sure he did with many others, to consider things sincerely... and dig deeper - it's important.
Please accept my condolences. Paul Kershaw, perhaps briefly and perhaps unknowingly, affected us.

When thinking about Paul. Teacher -yes, Director of theatrical productions - yes and both dedicated life’s work. But one of his greatest gifts was his ability to design fantastic sets and construct them. He was really gifted enough to have found a place in some of the largest theatres in the world. How privileged we were to have him !!

It has been years since I have seen your dad (Mr. Kershaw) but when I think back on high school he looms large in my memory. Not only was he my drama teacher but he trusted me as part of the makeup team from Grades 9-12 and put me on stage, in the chorus, for Grade 12’s “Fiddler”.
As an adult I recognize the patience and dedication it must have taken to coach high school students into producing good quality stage productions. I appreciate the time and effort he invested in us. I feel like he made a difference in my world. Sincerest condolences.

Hello Mark, David, Jani and all the family.
We were in Egypt when we heard about Paul’s passing…both Patricia and I have many fond memories of working in and with Paul on many productions over the years….everything from “Godspell” and “Man of La Mancha” (versions 1 and 2 ) to countless others.
Paul was a force of nature and made many people’s lives richer by his work in theatre and the arts.
He will be missed but not forgotten.
Our thoughts go out to you all.

Some of my fondest memories come from productions directed by PK when I was in high school. He was tough, but he drove us to succeed. His passion for the arts was evident, and he always pushed us to do more. Those dreaded calls to the front of the stage! I am so amazed with how much he gave to his students and to the community, and I hope that his family can take comfort in knowing how well loved and appreciated he was. It’s almost 40 years since my graduation now and I can definitely say that Mr. Kershaw played a big role in making me who I am today. I was so thrilled to have an opportunity to see Mr. Kershaw in the early 2000s. On the spur of the moment, I decided to go to a production there while on a visit to the Kootenays, and while driving by the Key City Theatre, saw Mr. Kershaw. I stopped and reconnected with him, and he was so proud to give me a tour of the facility. It was a special moment, and one I will always treasure. You will be missed. Thank you for all you have done.

Paul Kershaw was a special person--as a teacher he made you sit up and take notice. Never one to shy away from a bit of contoversy, yet he managed to steer you on a path that was true. After I delivered a speech and totally forgot my closing statement --he said to me, " Don't worry, as long as you have that great smile, noone will notice that there wasn't a punch line. He taught us to stand up - whether on the stage or behind the scenes--everyone was important. And for anyone in an English or Drama class I will always remember the "Peacock Jacket"

My condolences to Sara, Mark, David and Jani for your loss.
I first worked with Paul on the 1993 production of Man of La Mancha. He helped me define the details of my character and in subsequent productions always looked for ways to make my acting better; to give me more security onstage. I am grateful for the time we have spent together working on the craft of acting and directing. My favourite direction from Paul: ‘Just say the line.’
I appreciated being asked to attend various play-reading evenings where he could decide if he really wanted to produce a particular work. From my perspective, he always brought together clever actors to make the reading more than just an interesting exercise. And He and Sara provided a warm welcoming place to gather in the time between first rehearsal and the impending opening night.
I did not see you often, Paul, however I did think often, of you and your work, and how I could use it in any production I happened to find myself. I will not forget you.

One of the highlights of my knowing Paul was in being invited by him to participate in two of his professional stage productions at the theatre he can be credited with the inspiration and commitment that helped create it. I was amazed and enthralled to be able to work with him, and his generosity in letting me stay at his home made it all happen for me; “Lips Together, Teeth Apart” in 1994, and a few years later, the stage production of “Abundance” by Beth Henley. It had a total of about 25-30 scene changes in two acts. The only time I ever saw Paul ‘lose it’ was during one production of the show where our intrepid stage manager Gary Dalton somehow managed to open the curtain on one of the scenes with the wrong set installation for that scene!,, we all bumbled our way through it regardless. What an inspiring person and generous spirit. I always wanted to work with you again, Paul.

While we know these days are inevitable it doesn’t make them any easier. I loved this eulogy, especially the piece of PK seeing something in young adults that they hadn’t seen in themselves. He transformed us, not only into a character on stage, but into a different person long after the show ended. He had swag in the coolest of ways and in a way no one in our little city had.
My thoughts are with PK’s family - and a thank you for sharing him with us - there’s no one I can think of that spent time with PK that wasn’t richer for it. I’m so very grateful to have met him.

Bob and I are so sorry to hear this news. Both of us have had the valued experience of acting in a production directed by Paul, and while he was a tough director, he brought out the very best in everyone in his cast. Paul mentored me as a new director who had taken on a project that was a maybe a bit more than I could chew. He offered to design the set for me, and was available for advice. Both the show and his set design won the Abbott Award that year, and I attribute much of its success to him. I loved his tender heart even though it wasn't always easy to see behind his rather gruff exterior. Cranbrook theatre was so much better because he was here.

I always learned from Paul during theatrical events but the most significant memory I have of him is connected to arguably the most significant memory I have at all. I was marrying my high school sweetheart and we were on an absolutely tiny budget because I was 17 and 8 months pregnant at the time. He not only agreed to let us use the gazebo in his backyard, but he also freshened up the house and planted a ton of flowers that spring. He turned his yard into a stunning wedding venue for us. I have never forgotten the generosity and kindness of that.
