Obituary of Mary Williamson Stephenson

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

June 18, 1932 – February 16, 2021

Mary was born on June 18, 1932 in Burntisland, Scotland to Matilda (Long) and George Rough. As a young woman she moved to Sunderland to stay with her older brother George and got a job as a Bus Conductress. There she met her husband John Stephenson. They married and had their son John before immigrating to Canada. The first stop was Winnipeg, Manitoba where daughter Katrina and son Stuart were born. They then transferred due to John’s job as a C.P.R Police Officer to Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Mary spent these years raising her family. In 1984 the family was once again transferred to Cranbrook, B.C., where they both lived until their passing.

Mary was an active member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and the Railway Pensioners Club. She was a proud & loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her knitting skills were extraordinary from socks to sweaters to afghans by the mile. She loved music and loved to sing.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family, son John (Judy) Stephenson of Swift Current, Sask, daughter Katrina (Ken) Takahashi of Cranbrook, B.C., son Stuart (Karen) Stephenson of Cranbrook, B.C., grandsons Scott, John (Nikki), Jared (Mellisa), great granddaughters Grace & Sadie and her loving sister Christabel (Ronnie) Anderson of Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as many family members from across the UK.

She was predeceased by her husband John Stephenson in 1985, her parents Matilda & George Rough, her sisters Dorothy and Matilda and her brothers George, Andrew, and Robert.

A special thank you to all the Home Support and Green Home Staff who have lovingly cared for Mary through the years.

A family interment will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society can be made in Mary’s honour.
