1928 - 2020
Marion Russell Paul age 92, passed away on October 31, 2020 at the Kimberley Special Care Home “The Pines” in Kimberley, B.C.
Marion will be fondly remembered for her twinkling smile and for being a loving, proud, and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many. Born October 21, 1928 in Trail, British Columbia, Marion was raised in “Happy Valley,” Rossland B.C. Here she met her love and partner for life Don, and they were married in Rossland on September 1, 1948. After living in Trail for fourteen years, they moved to an acreage on Mill Road in Fruitvale and later, down the hill, to the Tamarac Park, where they lived until relocating to Cranbrook in 2015 to be closer to family.
Mom worked most of her adult life starting at Hope’s Bakery in Trail, where she cultivated her prowess at baking. She will ever be remembered for the countless cakes she created for so many lucky recipients on their birthdays and special occasions. She also worked at Urquhart’s Meat Market in Trail and Liberty Foods in Fruitvale before retiring from her work career as a secretary for Direct Systems in Trail.
Over the years, Mom enjoyed many interests and activities—skiing on Red Mountain, square dancing with the Silver City Square Dancers, teaching Sunday school, heading up the Trail Horsemen's Society concession stand and acting as secretary/timer for rodeo and team roping events for many years. In retirement, she loved travelling, camping, and fishing with Dad in their RV, playing bingo and the occasional trips to the Casino. She also enjoyed curling and golfing until suffering a stroke which left her physically unable. She was an ardent Blue Jays fan and was “glued to the television” whenever they were playing. After moving to Cranbrook, Mom resided for three years in her apartment at Joseph Creek Village. With her health declining, she moved to the Pines Special Care Home in Kimberley.
Marion is survived by her daughter Lynn Hughes and grandson Jason (Huey) of Cranbrook; daughter Debbie (Len) Curle of Calgary; granddaughters Rachel Curle of Calgary and Sarah (Kelly) Andrews of High River; great grandchildren Amethyst and Lukas Andrews of High River. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including special niece Sharon Bartlett (Jim Morris) of Cowichan Bay, B.C.
She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Ann Richardson, and her brothers Jack, Hugh, Bob and Bill and son-in-law Brian (Sam) Hughes.
The family gratefully thank the entire Pines staff and Dr. Ryan Lunge for the exceptional and compassionate care she received.
There will be no service by request, but please honour Mom by remembering the special times you shared with her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to The Pines Memorial and Development Society, or to the B.C Branches of the Kidney Foundation or Heart & Stroke.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services.
