Obituary of John Thomas Maher
1928 - 2009
John Thomas Maher passed away peacefully in Invermere, British Columbia on December 8, 2009.
John was born January 9, 1928 in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland. He was pre-deceased by his wife Eileen.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sons: John (Laurie) and Andrew (Mary); daughters: Janelle (Ted) and Aileen (Brian). John is also survived by his grandchildren: Kiara, Rowan, Aoife, and Keelin; his brother Kevin, and sister Maura, as well as many relatives and friends.
John was born and raised in Ireland and farmed there for many years. He was well recognized for his skill with horses and his work with the mentally handicapped association in Athy, Co. Kildare, his home town. He immigrated to Canada in 1983 and moved to the Columbia Valley, where he owned and operated the Columbia Motel for several years before retiring. John loved playing golf and enjoyed the many rounds he played with his golf buddies. With his trademark hat and Irish wit he was a well known figure in the Valley. He also loved to sing, and was a member of the Valley Voices for many years. John was a dedicated father who instilled the virtues of honesty and hard work in his children. He will be sadly missed and remembered with love.
A Funeral Mass to honor John's life was celebrated at St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church in Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 10:00 am.
