1923-2009

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of May Lawrence in Cranbrook on December 14, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer. May passed at the East Kootenay regional Hospital with family at her side.

May was born in Southampton, England in 1923. It was here that she met her future husband Harry. During the war, May worked as an ambulance driver. In 1951 May married her long time sweetheart Harry. In 1957, May and Harry moved to Canada where they made a new life for themselves. They moved to Golden in 1966 where they became actively involved in the community and the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1988, they moved to Aldergove where they continued their involvement with the Legion. In 2009, May moved into Bevan Lodge in Abbotsford, before coming to Garden View Village in Kimberley. May received great care and support and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at both places. May was a sharp dresser, who was also known for her many costumes that she wore to help add a little extra to every event she attended. May was an artist with her feet. As a trained, ballroom dancer, May spent countless hours teaching the art free to any one who wanted to learn. May was also a certified teacher of English as a second language, and donated countless hours to help people learn to read. Always one to give to the community, May has been honored with a lifetime membership from the Legion, where she served for many years as the Poppy chairperson in Aldergrove.May is survived by her sister Violet (England), son Mark (Donna) of Cranbrook, grandchildren Derek (Cheryl) of Aldergrove, Traci (Rob), Craig of Cranbrook, and Adam of Walnut Grove. May was predeceased by her husband Harry, daughter Ruth, and parents Walter and Ethel.

A celebration of May's life will be held in Aldergrove at a later date.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the cancer society.
