Joan,Although it had been awhile since I last saw you, I will never forget all of the moments and laughter I was able to share with you at your house, in French classes, at basketball games and tournaments, etc. You taught me correct grammar and prepared many a home-cooked meal for me. I was always amazed at your energy, passion for life and the way you took care of that younger daughter of yours (drawing her baths and preparing meals on wheels for her during college!) I am so thankful for the opportunity to have known you. Rest peacefully.

We are thinking of you here in Vancouver. I can't imaging how hard this must be for you all, but maybe I can fill in with my perspective on my lovely Aunt:I was really glad I had the chance to visit a year or so ago. My Aunt Joan and I talked in the kitchen for what must have been at least an hour about the family tree. We laughed and laughed.I remember us visiting long ago on several winters - skiing, and eating her amazing pankakes! My Aunt Joan was very special and made me feel completely comfortable - lots of hugs and laughs - she even taught me a few things about cooking when I was maybe ten years of age.I used to enjoy overhearing the discussions at the "grown-ups" table, and she was always in the thick of a spirited discussion about things I hadn't the foggiest notion about. But I enjoyed it notwithstanding. Maybe I learned a little as I spied on them :)I'll never forget her smile and her laughter! I can hear it now as I type.I will always think of her like that, and I know the Carley family will remember all the great things about her as time passes.

To my Auntie Joan: I will always remember how you embraced us when we were together. As I write this, I am reflecting back on all of our family vacations, those awesome camping trips, and even nordic skiing with you and Grannie Church(and all of the tag-a-long dogs!)Thanks for the warm memories, and thank-you for making a difference in my life!

$5 years ago Ian brought Joan, his bride, to NZ to meet me, his sister, and our parents. Joan was so glamerous; tall, slender, like a model. I was in awe. When I later got to know her better, I learned there was indeed much to admire; her intelligence, her wit, her devotion to family and her home, her incredible kindness and loyalty.I loved Joan and I will miss her.

My deepest sympathy to the Carley family.(I just noticed the obituary recently). I went to school with Sean since kindergarden, and Ian Carley was my teacher in High School. There were times we spent at the Carley home, and Joan was always so hospitable. I just lost my father in Cranbrook on Christmas day, at only 66 years old, so my grief is shared with all of you. We will never forget the ones we love, and they will forever be in our hearts and our memories. Sincerely, Jennifer Burton

My deepest condolences to you all. I could fill this with kind words and memories but I will keep it simple and brief. She gave support to my family, and especially to myself as a young person. I appreciated it at the time and over the years I have become more understanding and appreciative of the kindness and strength that she extended to me.

Ms. Carley, I met you years ago as an 11 year old kid when you so kindly let me ride your horse Soroya. I loved how vivacious and eager you were to set an aspiring rider on her way. We lost touch, but about a year ago I was startled to meet you again through my summer job as a home support worker. We had lots to talk and reminisce about and you were always interested in how my schooling was going. I would always regret when our time was up and I had to go on to see other clients. Now I've completed my nursing program and I can only hope the rest of my clients are as pleasant, brave and memorable as you - I really enjoyed knowing you.

Dear Carleys, I knew Joan for 14 years and spentmany Christmas holidays in the Carley household. From the start Joan made me feel like I was one of the family and she and I shared stories about my home town of Whitehorse -- she worked there teaching (Joan even taught my sister Frances, and made a great impression on her). I was impressed by her fortitude and the care she put into everything she did and her great love for her family. From Joan I learned the right way to load the dish washer, and I will never forget her. With love and best regards Jay
