Obituary of S. Brian Hamilton

Shaun Brian Hamilton passed away peacefully, in Cranbrook, BC, on January 13, 2008, aged 81. Born March 3, 1926, in Timmins, Ontario, Brian was the only child of William Samuel and Beatrix Mary (Sawyer) Hamilton, both of whom predeceased Brian. During his early years, Brian lived with his parents in various Ontario and BC mining communities, and received his schooling at several schools, graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1948 with a B.A.Sc. in Geological Engineering. He later received a Life Membership from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Brian honed his skills working at Pine Point and Yellowknife, N.W.T., and later moved to the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley, where he met Shirlea Anne Armstrong. Brian and Shirlea were married in Kimberley on May 8, 1950, and were blessed with 6 daughters: Leigh Bagnall; Leslie Askew; Beth Reid (Bruce); Jill DaSilva (Phil), and Darci Hamilton. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Chris Elaine, in 1958. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, Phillip and Jen Blindenbach, Kyle Bagnall, Amy and Shaun Askew, Cole, Eric and Cara Reid, Lisa and Chris DaSilva, Joel Hamilton and Ryan Martin and a great granddaughter, Abby Martin.Brian was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, and spent many hours taking family and scenic photographs, some of which were award winners. He was active in the Kimberley Rod and Gun Club, the Kimberley and Cranbrook Curling Clubs and Lions Clubs, and the Cranbrook Golf Club. He was also a lifelong supporter of the Liberal Party, holding Executive positions and being heavily involved in local campaigns. After many years as a geologist with Cominco, Brian switched careers to become a realtor in 1964, and the family moved to Cranbrook. Brian spent his real estate career with Cranbrook Agencies, and was a well-respected appraiser, a top salesman and a partner. He was a valued member (and later President) of the Kootenay Real Estate Board. He retired in 1991. During his working years and after his retirement, he also worked as a prospector and geological consultant. Brian leaves his family and loved ones with memories of many special times, in particular the summer spent at Riondel. No flowers please. Instead, donations in memory of Brian may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. A family celebration of Brian's life will take place at a later date.
