Harry passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday June 16, 2007, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Harry was born in Holland on December 6, 1920. At 20 years of age Harry became part of the Dutch Underground, was captured and went through a Concentration Camp experience. Several years later, with the love of his life, Anne, he immigrated to Canada in February 1951. He lived and worked in B.C. until 1956 when he decided to go into the Ministry. After 6 years at U.B.C. (including a Bachelor of Arts degree) he became ordained as a United Church minister in 1962.
He served as a United Church minister in Loreburn, Moosejaw and Regina, Saskatchewan. Just before retirement he served for 10 years as the Executive Director of the Senior Citizens Provincial Council of Saskatchewan, during which time he also acquired a Masters Degree in psychology. In 1985 he retired with Anne to Cranbrook. Harry returned to the ministry for a 2-year period to help out the Fernie-Sparwood pastoral charge.Throughout his life Harry enjoyed carpentry, camping, spending time with his children and grandchildren, often helping them with their projects.
Harry is survived by his wife Anne, 3 children Rolf (Sheryl). Carla (Rob), Tony (Nadja), 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service for Harry will be at the Cranbrook United Church on Saturday June 23rd, 2007 at 1:00 pm. Reverend Barbara Langton and Reverend Henry Friesen officiating.
