My wife and I were the caregivers and owners of Pioneer lodge when Morley came to live with us in the early seventies. Morley was very concerned about keeping in touch with his family and we could always find a reason to drive to Creston so as he could visit and get the latest information on all his relatives. Morley became a pillar in the community known by all as a friendly happy go lucky guy. We were together for 28 years and I remember Morley saying to me upon his arrival you are going to have to look after me but I keep thinking did I look after him or did he look after me. Had a two hour visit with him a few weeks before his passing and we exchanged huckleberry picking stories, the time the purity dairy ice cream truck broke down and we got to help salvage whatever we could, our trips to expo 73 in Spokane, expo 86 in Vancouver but his favorite place was the Calgary Stampede. Morley set me straight a few times, my wife and I were having a tiff in the kitchen and when she left he said don't treat your wife like that she looks after all of us I don't ever remember having another tiff with her in the 54 years we have been together. I think every person in Cranbrook has one of his pet rocks with a story behind it. Sorry to say goodbye Morley but you made this world a better place. Hope there are some good rocks where you are.

I spent my teens living & working in the lodge where Morley lived. He had the best laugh and smile! He always had kind words- and was always concerned about others being okay. We shared many laughs and conversations over doing dishes after dinner every night. He never ever complained. Ronnie washed & Morley always dried. Ronnie always grumbled & Morley always tries to get him to smile & laugh. Those were a lot of dishes every night!

Our family first met Morley in 1981 at the United Church - we fell in love with his sweet spirit and kind nature. Cranbrook will miss Morley and Cranbrook will be lesser without Morley saying Hi to everyone. Rest in peace, our friend. Annalee and Laird

I have many fond memories of Morley coming to visit Leslie and I when we were young. He helped us pick the little cherries and showed us so many things in nature. I remember him helping with haying and getting in the winter wood. According to my Dad, he liked to be paid in coin, not bills so that was important when he came to work.
He was truly a special man!

Meet Athlete Morley Kilgren
For Morley Kilgren, being a Special Olympics BC - Kimberley/Cranbrook athlete means so much more than just the final score.
As Kilgren approaches his 91st birthday in May, the 5-pin bowler may be SOBC's oldest athlete, but he says he's still a kid at heart. Whether it's at his residence at Pioneer Lodge in Cranbrook, or at the local bowling lanes, the one constant with Kilgren is his infectious smile.
Ivy-Lynne Stein, Kilgren's current 5-pin coach, says her memories of him go back far beyond her coaching days. As a life-long resident in Cranbrook, Stein has known Kilgren since her childhood.
"Morley always had a smile and handshake for anyone," Stein says. "As a girl guide, we would go there and sing to the residents and Morley always got up to shake all our hands and told us what a good job we did."
She says anytime she passes Kilgren on the street, he's quick to share a warm hello.
Stein's sentiments are shared by Susanne Elliot, the Program Manager at Pioneer Lodge. She says he's an "amazing individual who has brought so much joy to all those he has encountered."
That smile also landed Kirgren the job of playing Santa Claus at Christmas parties, says Stein.
He first signed up with SOBC in its infancy in September of 1984, just four years after it opened its doors in the province. Over the years Kilgren has also tried his hand at softball, running, soccer, basketball, bocce, and badminton.
"Being an athlete is good," Kilgren says. "It is good exercise and good for my muscles."
He says competing in athletics has also given him the opportunity to meet people he would otherwise never get the chance to. Whether it's riding the bus to go bowling with his friend Bob, or he's just going for a coffee, Kilgren enjoys the benefits and social skills SOBC has brought to his life over the past 33-plus years. He's also happy to share some friendly advice to anyone considering signing up with SOBC. Just like the smile on his face, it's wide and deep.
"Make friends," Kilgren says.
