I am sorry to learn of Guy's passing. I spent many days up at the Trail general office arguing and negotiating with Guy. He was a tough honest man whose word was reliable. I had a lot of respect for his integrity.
My I offer my condolences to your family.

Guy and Jeanie were among my parents' first and best friends upon arriving in Trail in '56. They were across the road neighbours in Montrose and stayed close during the ensuing years. Some of my oldest and most cherished memories are of time spent with the Downies. I can still hear Uncle Guy, carving a roast for dinner, asking "Andrew, how's your hungry tonight?" Our thoughts are with you all.

Dear Downie family, we were so sorry to hear of Guy's passing. He and Jeanie became good friends of ours when he came to work at the Workers Compensation Review Board and at the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal. We fondly remember many good times with them over the years, and enjoyed their intelligence, integrity, warmth and humour. We last saw Guy and Jeanie over a leisurely lunch at the golf club in Kimberley. We were saddened to hear of the passing of Jeanie and then Noel, but were heartened that Guy had beloved family nearby. He continued to stay in touch with us with his emails and his lovely pictures. We hope you are comforted by your remembrances of his full and happy life, as we are. Our thoughts are with you.

Greetings to the Downie family,
When I arrived at St. Paul's Nanaimo 14 years ago one of the first people to champion my work as Priest/Pastor was your mother and your father. Although your father was not a regular church attender his support was always there with your mother.
Each morning, I believe, he would search the internet or news from the printed source about Saskatchewan my home province which would later arrive on my desk. As well each time a new issue of stamps with Saskatchewan on them your mother would appear with a page of them for me.
I have always treasured my memories of their time with us in Nanaimo.
Likely my favorite story of your parents was your mother telling me of how the commercial dishwasher came to be at St. Paul's. As your mother shared: She would go home from a church function, regularly, complaining about doing the dishes in the old kitchen. I guess one day Downie HAD HEARD ENOUGH. He said if it upsets you so much go to the church and give them the money needed for a good dishwasher. Thanks be God for such a generous donation to St. Paul's.
Now many years on and the parish rebuilt the Parish Hall (completed in 2016) with a totally commercial grade kitchen. I know how proud your parents would be of it.
I enjoyed many great conversations with Downie at parish social functions in our years of time together at Nanaimo.
Blessings to your family.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow in the family who loves and shares together.

So sad to learn that Guy had passed. He and Jean were long time friends of my parents (Doris and Bill) in Kimberley and Trail, and my Dad always considered him to be a very talented manager and colleague at Cominco. A tough time for the family having lost Noel so recently, too. I know the family will draw strength from each other. But many others are thinking about you too, sending sincere sympathies and wishing you peace and solace.

Our sincere condolences to the Downie family. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet Guy in person but we did have a few phone conversations and exchanged a few e-mails. Guy was a cousin to our mother, Irene Elena Todd Hepplewhite. His mother Elena was born a Todd & was a sister to our grandfather James Todd. Guy and his beloved Jeanie were very generous in sharing information and stories of what they knew of the Todd family which has since been added to our family tree. I know that this wonderful Dad, Grandfather & Great Grandfather will be sadly missed & hopefully the many special memories you have will help you all through this sad time. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Rest in peace Guy.
