TIMEPIECE
Once shiny and keeping perfect Time, the old timepiece sits motionless on the dresser, worn and tarnished. With flexible band, analog face, ticks instead of numbers, date window, self winding mechanism and gold in colour it was my first "real" watch; a man's watch. As the years went by the reliable timepiece served me well, never failing to track the passing of Time, minute by minute, second by second, day in and day out. Occasionally, I would set it aside in favour of a new, modern watch, but the reliable old timepiece would always find its way back onto my wrist when the new one eventually failed. As years of use slowly wore away the gold finish exposing the stainless steel casing beneath, I came to admire the perseverance of the craftsmanship that kept it ticking, the cogs and gears within spinning and reciprocating in harmony measuring increments of Time with each precise movement; a graceful dance of delicate machinery and spatial continuum. Inevitably, I awoke one morning to find the tarnished old watch sitting motionless on the dresser. Frozen in Time below its scratched and scarred glass face the hands marked the exact second of its demise. My trusty timepiece would measure Time no more. The irony was not lost on me that it had expired within only a few months of the passing of my father who, along with my mother, had given it to me 35 years ago for my 15th birthday. One of faith might see that as a divine sign, but I have no belief in such theology. It was pure coincidence; an occurrence that was set in motion the day my father was born and the day the watch was assembled. The old timepiece reminded me of my father, how reliable and precision oriented he was. "If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right", he would say. Not everyone shares that point of view these days. He took pride in everything he did both at work and at home. Not everyone shares that work ethic these days. He was a perfectionist in an imperfect world. As the years went by my father was the epitome of reliability, never failing to provide the necessities of Life for our family, minute by minute, second by second, day in and day out. Over the years the ebb and flow of friendships came and went much like the tides do yet my father's friendship and love remained constant and reliable. He and I had our differences, as father and son do, but as years of wisdom and awareness accumulated I came to admire his perseverance and attention to detail, the heart and mind within beating and analyzing in harmony accomplishing anything he set out to do with each precise movement; a graceful dance of delicate biology and steadfast conviction. The last time I saw him he was frozen in Time, greyed hair and wrinkled skin marking his state of being at the exact second of his demise. My beloved father would travel the strands of Time no more. Once shiny and keeping perfect Time, the old timepiece sits motionless on the dresser, worn and tarnished. A priceless reminder of precious Time gone by.

Earl has left a legacy of excellence with many past fellow employee's and customers alike.
Earl always promoted the idea of "Doing it Right" and instilled this in his crews to the point that Finning Cranbrook was known as the place to go to when you wanted a superior mechanical repair or exchange product to fit your needs.
I believe he promoted a sense of personal pride in workmanship and this was just part of his teaching/mentoring skills that he used to influence many, myself included.
I can truly say he improved my life skills and we shared many days enjoying a mutual "Love" of the drag race world and really anything involved with the auto world that intrigued us both.
Calm. cool and collected suited his perfectionist style and we all benefited from his input on any issue be it personal or business.
Earl has left us in body but his "Legacy" lives on in many.
My very sincere condolences Elaine and family and "Thank you for the family pictures"
Barry MacLeod
