I had a dream about Mr Mackie last which made me google him just wanting to see how he was going as I fondly remember him as one of my favourite teachers. I am now 41 from Sydney, he came to teach at our school Epping Heights Public School as an exchange teacher. He was so kind and so talented. Very sad learning of his passing. Bye Mr Mackie. Love you. Ming.

My heart breaks to hear the news of Mr.Mackie you brought such a beautiful calmness as a substitute teacher for all of my sons, you made them laugh and truly loved your art work. They were heart broken to know we lost you. Heaven gained a true angel the day you passed. You will be greatly missed.

We are so sorry to hear of Brian's passing. What a wonderful, caring teacher he was. He taught our youngest daughter at Gordon Terrace in the early 80s and he was loved by all of his students and parents. What a great sense of humour he had! Our deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

I was saddened to hear of Brian's passing. We had some really good times together. Brian was the first boy I brought home from school. He taught me how to braid my doll's hair in grade one. We went all the way through school together. We went from grade one to our first year of university at NDU in Nelson together. Those were the days my friend! Heaven will be painted beautifully by you! From now on, whenever I see a rainbow, I will think of Brian! :rainbow: . Heather Stone (nee Millner)

Am very sorry to hear of your loss. Although it has been many years since I last saw Brian up at North Star I still remember his unique personality with fondness. He had a rapier sharp wit and gift with creative sarcasm that would do Jay Leno proud. He was also very good at track, incredibly fast. And yes, he was above all an artist. I remember his sketching going back to the Blarchmont School days. He would do incredible sketches of classmates from memory. And every now and then would be called out by a teacher for doodling in class, especially in Mr. Sinclair's English "the doldrums class". Yes, Brian was an artist from a very young age, it was as natural as breathing for him. I have no doubt that thousands of BC kids were encouraged to develop their own passions for art by Brian over the years. He was a good guy, a unique ray of light in a mountain mining town. I am sorry for your loss.

Truly rocked by his passing.
Mr. Mackie taught me grade 3 and grade 5 at Steeples Elemenatry (1987 and 1989). My favorite memory would be the time he turned our classroom into an airplane and "took us to Ireland". Every detail from the plane tickets, to the slides from his Ireland trip, to the stewardesses (and stewards) and even the barf bags. It was an incredible stretch of imagination, but that was him in a nutshell.
So much of what he taught has weaved its way into my life. He taught his students to not only think outside the box but to never give up on something...the possibility to turn what we thought were flub-ups into masterpieces was always there. We just didn't see it yet.
When I told my older sister about his passing she replied, "Is this THE Mr. Mackie"...she never had him as a teacher, but he was infamous in our house and she knew all about him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian's family and friends. We were saddened by the sudden loss of a truly wonderful teacher and artist. My children had the pleasure of being taught by Brian and colleagues and I were also luckily enough to have him teach us some art skills to use with young children. A good person will live on in our memories.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Mackie. Three words came to mind immediately - kind, gentle and creative. I always wished I had him as a teacher. Whenever I peeked into his classroom, I was envious of all the fun that was occurring in there.
As a former student at Gordon Terrace Elementary, I was often found at the display case, admiring his annual caricature of the staff. His art was comical and captured the true idiosyncrasies of his colleagues. Whenever I revisited the caricature, I discovered something new and hilarious that I had previously missed. His talent and creativity has left an indelible memory in my mind.
May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Julie Fiorentino

I worked at Kootenay Orchards for 20 years and always enjoying seeing and experiencing all the art projects Brian taught his students, he filled the school with art and made it an even more interesting and wonderful place to work. We both retired but continued to sub, my last conversation with Brian was in the hallway at Highlands and we discussed art, he was interested in hearing about a art place in Fernie. where I had recently purchased a painting and showed Brian a photo of it. I never thought that would be the last time I talked him. When ever I look at my new painting that I showed Brian that day, I will think of him. Brian Mackie will be missed by many teachers and students,
my heart goes out to his family and his many friends. He will be missed.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Brian's illness and so shortly later of his passing. I worked with Brian for several years at Steeples and after his retirement we were fortunate to have him come to Highlands, as a a T.O.C. For two years, he spent a few weeks teaching all of our students about the elements of art and inspirational artists, guiding them to create amazing art projects and then volunteering hours of his own time to set up a wonderful art exhibition in our gym to display the students work for families and friends to see. We have lost a special person in our community, but he has certainly left a legacy with the students who had the opportunity to be taught by him, as well as all the teachers and support staff who got to work with him. Wishing comfort to his family and dear friends who will miss him so deeply.

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Mackie as my teacher for two years at Kootenay Orchards Elementary. His teaching style was extraordinary, no matter what the subject he always found a way to make it fun and creative. From painting to clay models, he opened up a window in all his students. I owe my love of art to him and for that I am so grateful. He will be missed by many.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories Mr. Mackie

Such a terrible loss for many, Brian "Mr Mackie" as I knew him. His zest for life, his passion for teaching and his unbelievable talent in art. I have never seen a teacher make such an impact on so many lives. I became skilled in clay masks, nearly 30 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. You sir will be missed by many and fondly remembered. May your memory live on and your soul Rest In Peace.

Brian will be remembered for his ability to engage even the most resistant artist into his world. Once Brian retired from Kootenay Orchards, he continued sharing his passion with students and teachers in Cranbrook through his TTOC work. He also taught many of our student teachers through the UVIC teaching program. Every elementary school has some of Brian's art displayed either in the classrooms or in the hallways. He was a treasure for sure and will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of meeting and working with him.

As our colleague and close family friend, Brian could always make us laugh. Whether it was a personalized T-shirt, pottery bowls, Christmas angels, or one of his caricature sculptures, Brian's gifts personified his uniqueness. An evening of games with Brian would have us laughing as he recapped "the week or day that was". He had the ability to make the mundane come alive with humour.
Thanks for the memories.
