Norma Roberta Duncan
(nee Woods)
1933 - 2017
Norma Duncan passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC at the age of 84.
Norma was born to Jim and Freida Woods on April 25, 1933 in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was the second of three children. She was raised in Regina and attended Albert School and Scott Collegiate before attending a technical school where she gained her office skills. While a youth, Norma was active with St. Andrews United Church where she was involved with the CGIT, the Youth Ministry and teaching Sunday school.
While in high school she met a tall, handsome young man named Chuck Duncan whom she fell in love with and married 3 years later on May 17th, 1952.
In 1956 Norma and Chuck packed up and moved to Vancouver with their eldest son Dick. While there, the family grew to include one more son, Jim and a daughter Trish. After moving to various locations for Chuck's work including Powell River, Cranbrook, Fernie, and Minnesota, they settled in Sparwood for 16 years before finally moving back to Cranbrook in 1996.
Norma had many lifelong friends, many of which she had met in her youth and through the different places that she and Chuck had lived. She was a letter writer and stayed in contact with many friends throughout Canada and the USA and was never one to send a form letter, especially during the holidays.
Norma's family was very important to her. She taught them to be proud of who they are and never missed an opportunity for a visit with them. Many of her children's friends were treated as her own, they called her "mom" and she wouldn't hesitate to "set them straight." She loved to keep her hands busy with her many hours of handiwork which included sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitch. Her pictures hang on family walls, her quilts keep us warm at night, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were never without her mittens.
Norma was predeceased by her parents and an older infant brother and a daughter-in law. She is survived by her loving husband Chuck of 65 years, 3 children Dick (Donna), Jim (Pat) and Trish (Stan), 7 grandchildren Tammy (Jesse), Alan (Tracy), Shawn, Scott, Brenden (Janelle), Tommy and Tasha, 11 great grandchildren , 1 sister Glenna Lindberg, 2 nephews and 2 great nieces. She will be greatly missed by family and friends including her Tuesday coffee group and the Wednesday afternoon knitting ladies.
In lieu of a funeral an open house tea in memory of Norma will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm in her daughter's home at 335 - 17th Avenue South in Cranbrook.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
