Gertie passed away peacefully at "The Pines" (Kimberley Special Care Home) with her niece Rochelle by her side on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 93 years of age.
Gertie was born in Grandin, AB. She met the love of her life Dori Arnfinnson near Lac La Biche, AB, and they were married in 1941. They moved to Kimberley in the late 1940's spent a few years camping, and then bought a cabin at St. Marys Lake. She loved to sing, strum the banjo, play the spoons, and in later years, she was happy just to sit and listen to music. Quite a few nephews, nieces and friends stayed with Gertie and Dori in the house on DeWolfe Avenue in the early years, and have fond memories of that time. Gertie loved to play bridge, crib and bingo, and even made the odd trip to the casino. She was also a lifetime member of the Catholic Women's League of Sacred Heart Church in Kimberley for 67 years.
Gertie was predeceased by her husband Dori, children Darryl and Barbara, parents Maxime and Gabrielle Huppie, her sisters Irene Schumacher, Doreen Bowness and Mildred Gairdner, her brother Peter, grand daughter-in-law Gina Gauthier and her great-great-granddaughter Aleiya. She is survived by her brother Tommy, 3 grandchildren Maxine (Ron) Jewell, Darryl Gauthier and Barry Gauthier, 9 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces, and special niece Rochelle Wallach.
A memorial service for Gertie will be held on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kimberley. Interment of cremated remains will take place in Kimberley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kimberley Special Care Home, 386 - 2nd Avenue, Kimberley, BC, V1A 2Z8.
A very special THANK YOU to the Pines for the wonderful care they gave Gertie; in her words...It was "beaver dam good."
