Gordon Blayne Sherret
February 11, 1932 - November 21, 2016
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Blayne Sherret, loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to many. He passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, holding the hands of Lorraine, his beloved wife of 59 years.
Gordon was born and raised on the family farm in Coalhurst, Alberta on February 11, 1932, the youngest son of Andrew and Margaret Sherret. He was one of eleven children in the family, three of whom survive him. His mother and siblings moved to Cranbrook in 1946.
Gordon was a physically strong man, and was accustomed to working in road and highway construction and maintenance. He was instrumental in highway development projects, such as highway 93 in Kootenay National Park and the earthworks for the Elk River Bridge. Later on, he became self-employed as a grader operator with his company, G & L Contracting, providing road maintenance services for Crestbrook Forest Industries for many years.
Family was first and foremost for Gordon, and his prime directive in life was the care and well-being of his wife and two children. He had many great friendships in his life, and all the associated memories are of great comfort to the family.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Lorraine, son Gordie (Jill) and grandsons Michael and Mark of Calgary, daughter Lorrie-Anne (Darren) Weidner, granddaughter Brianne and grandson Nathan, also of Calgary. He is also survived by sister Gwen Wills of Cranbrook, sister Carol (Norman) Rediger of Preeceville, Saskatchewan, brother Jim of Cranbrook, sister-in-law Annette Sherret of Edmonton, brother-in-law Don (Heather) MacLellan of White Rock, BC, and brother-in-law Hugh (Doris) MacLellan of Peterborough, Ontario. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Respecting the family's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. A graveside service will be held at Westlawn Cemetery in the spring of 2017.
Donations in Gordon's memory to the BC Lung Association would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
